Amazon recently announced three renewable energy projects in the United States and Spain. These projects will support the company’s commitment to the Climate Pledge. Additionally, this is one way for the company to reach 80 percent renewable energy by 2024, 100 percent renewable energy target by 2030, net-zero carbon by 2040.
Amazon’s Commitment to Major Investments in Renewable Energy
Amazon values its commitment to major investments in renewable energy as a crucial step in addressing its carbon footprint worldwide. Its newest renewable energy project in Europe will be Amazon’s first large-scale project in Sevilla, Spain. The new solar farm will provide 149 megawatts of new renewable capacity once complete.
According to the Business Wire website, the newest solar projects of Amazon in the United States will be installed in Lee County, Illinois, and Northern Virginia. They will have a total of 180 megawatts and anticipated to generate around 400,000 MWh of renewable energy yearly.
When the three new renewable energy projects begin operations, they will provide approximately 329 megawatts of additional renewable capacity. They will supply the company’s fulfillment network in Europe and Amazon Web Services data centers globally.
Currently, there are more than 70 clean energy projects under the company. These projects will provide more than 1,900 megawatts of renewable capacity and are expected to generate over 5.3 million MWh of clean energy every year.
Local Governments Support Amazon in its Renewable Energy Initiatives
Kara Hurst, the Director of Sustainability at Amazon, showcased the company’s commitment to utilizing clean energy. “Earlier this year, we announced The Climate Pledge, setting a goal to meet the Paris Agreement 10 years early and be net-zero carbon by 2040. We also plan to run on 80 percent renewable energy by 2024 and 100 percent renewable energy by 2030. We’re committed to investing in renewable energy as a critical step toward addressing our carbon footprint globally.”
On the other hand, Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker lauded Amazon for investing in his state. “As we work to put our state on a path to 100 percent clean and renewable energy, Illinois is proud to have Amazon invest in a major solar project in our state. Addressing climate change will take all of us working together, and leadership from state governments and the business community will demonstrate how we can sustainably power a modern economy and create good-paying jobs.”
Virginia Senator Mark R. Warner also praised the company for its commitment to renewable energy. “I applaud Amazon for its investment in renewable energy projects in the Commonwealth of Virginia. This solar energy project will generate 80 megawatts of renewable energy. This will also lead to a cleaner and healthier environment.”
