Phillip Riley is proud to be supporting VRB Energy, a global leader in vanadium redox battery (VRB®) technology and driven to empower a clean energy future for the world. VRB Energy is a privately owned, US company majority owned by Ivanhoe Electric (NYSE:IE). They are currently producing the most advanced vanadium-redox batteries in the world that deliver the lowest levelized cost for the integration of renewable energy for developers and utilities. 
With 65 staff globally, a manufacturing plant in China and increasing demand for their 4-12 hour VRB-ESS® products, they are looking to establish US manufacturing facilities. VRB Energy currently has 40MWh of installed capacity and a further 750MWh of projects in development. 

The Role 
The Applications Engineer is an essential new hire for the business that will work closely with the pre-existing engineering team in China to design new energy storage projects and ensure product delivery to US developer and utility customers. The role will also help replicate the existing manufacturing process in China at future new US manufacturing facilities. The company’s Gen 3 VRB-ESS® is based on a 1MW Power Module building block and one 
or multiple Power Modules are sized with tanks of electrolyte to deliver 4-12 hours of energy storage. Because of the close working relationship between the successful candidate and the engineering team in China, it would be highly beneficial that they will be able to communicate fluently in Mandarin. 
Responsibilities of the role will include: 
  • Understanding prospective customer technical and economic requirements for storage applications and coordinating within the organization to translate those requirements into proposed VRB solutions 
  • Designing technical product configurations and coordinating with the sales and marketing team to prepare technical responses and sales proposals in response to customer inquiries and tenders, including preparation and editing of engineering drawings and schematics 
  • Supporting other engineering team members on product development, manufacturing and supplier qualification 
  • Optimizing VRB energy storage solutions for integration with large-scale solar and wind power systems 
  • Discussing and negotiating with utility and grid operators regarding both grid interconnection and microgrid configuration of VRB energy storage solutions 
  • Supporting sales team with inquiries from global markets on an as-needed basis 
About you 
To be considered for this rare opportunity to join an industry leader in an extraordinary time of growth, we are seeking applications from an application engineering professional who possess the following skills, experience and attributes: 
  • Proven experience delivering end-to-end utility-scale projects for an Owner, IPP, Developer, Utility or EPC 
  • Applications Engineering qualifications and experience across the Power Generation sector, (preferably with a battery storage or renewable energy company) 
  • Knowledge of project and product development cycles including planning, budgeting, cost estimating, and risk management 
  • Experience with the permitting process and utility interconnection process for large-scale or distributed generation projects 
  • Technical qualifications including an electrical, civil, or mechanical engineering degree, with knowledge of basic controls software protocols and configurations 
  • Fluency with CAD, Simulink and other engineering software tools 
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills - Bi-lingual in English and Mandarin is highly desirable
