What Women Can Expect in the Booming US Renewable Energy Industry

A lot have already been said about gender equality especially in the workplace. This issue even prompts popular celebrities to speak up about this social issue. However, it may also be true that women might be searching for jobs in the most typical industries but not in the U.S. renewable energy sector. This may also be a factor why it seems hard for them to land a career in a male dominated sector.

Maybe it’s time for women to consider exploring other promising jobs or industries. Maybe it’s time to search for a career in the US renewables industry.

Why Renewable Energy?

What’s good about the renewable energy sector is that it is booming and shows a promising future. With all the new clean alternatives for power generation, the clean energy industry in the U.S. is surely on its way to the top.

Clean energy fields also hire women in strong leadership roles. For example, more women engineers and HR professionals are hired because in this industry. According to Abigail Ross Hopper, the President and CEO of the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA), “Muscles are not the prerequisite. Brains and work ethic are the prerequisites.”

Some power companies in the United States are also breaking the norm by hiring women in the executive positions previously dominated by men. Also, a study by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) this year showed women account for about 45 percent of the administrative jobs in the industry and 28 percent from the STEM professions.

What awaits women in the U.S. renewable energy sector?

Approximately by 2050, renewables will supply all energy needs in the United States. This statistic came from the government’s energy researchers at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, implying that the 27 percent of renewable energy workforce comprised of women could still increase in the coming years.

The solar and wind sectors under the clean energy industry are the top two sectors hiring women. And with the increasing number of women pursuing degrees in STEM  studies, the future is bright both for the women and the renewable energy in the U.S.
